MLA are committed to the welfare and safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All students should expect to feel safe within all areas of the summer programme.

The primary concern at all times must be the interests and safety of each student and the organisation takes all reasonable steps to protect children from harm, discrimination or degrading treatment, and to uphold their rights in order to create and maintain a safe and suitable summer school environment.

What we provide 

Safeguarding Policy

  • A Welfare Manager: responsible for the pastoral care of each student, available at the MLA office in the centre, and always happy to help.
  • Medical staff on site.
  • Links with local hospitals and other emergency services.
  • 24/7 access to a responsible member of staff at all times day or night at our 24hr emergency contact number.
  • Students are issued with an MLA ID card.
  • Staff trained at Safeguarding Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 in all centres.
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead available 24/7 to implement child protection procedures.
  • All staff are subject to record reference checks and official background checks to confirm their suitability to work with children. These include enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) and PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) certificates.

Arrival in the country

  • Students & Groups are met on arrival at the airport.
  • All students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Residential accommodation is full board and all students will be provided a hot or packed meal upon arrival.

During your stay

  • Students must wear an ID card especially when out on an excursion as it has emergency contact details.
  • Students under 18 are not permitted to leave the centre unaccompanied at any time.
  • All students under the age of 18 should be aware that it is compulsory to attend all lessons and activities.
  • Classrooms and other areas of the school accessible to students are supervised at all times.
  • Staff are easily accessible and can be found any time of the day.
  • Night patrol staff supervise the centre site and accommodation during the night.

Travel and Health Insurance

  • All students travelling abroad must have Travel Insurance in case of medical or other emergency.

Medical conditions

  • Students must inform us in advance about any prescribed medication in order to provide proper care.
  • First aid, and, if necessary, medical care in the nearest hospital.
  • Students who have special dietary requirements must notify in advance.

On Departure

  • Students & Groups are taken to the airport.
  • We collect feedback from Students and Group Leaders about their time with us.

Prevent Policy

MLA understands its responsibilities under the Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 to reduce the likelihood of people of all ages being radicalised or drawn into terrorism and everyone during the MLA programme is involved in this effort:

  • British values are exemplified to students in the MLA syllabus, including lessons based on British culture and traditions.
  • MLA has a Prevent Lead who is trained to deal with any concerns.
  • Staff are trained on the key areas of prevent to identify signs, explain terminology and contact the Prevent Lead in the event of concern.
  • MLA ensures sub-contractors are aware of Prevent and what is expected of them.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Policy

MLA (Move Language Ahead) is committed to providing an inclusive, supportive and safe environment for everyone who works here. This policy applies to all employees, service providers, volunteers, interns, group leaders, agents and stakeholders.

Everyone has a part to play in being aware of, preventing and dealing with sexual harassment. The Policy sets out the expectations for the behaviour of our staff as well as what we can do to protect all staff from sexual harassment.
